Cheltenham Day 4 – when the going gets tough

Just in case anyone is still listening… I wouldn’t if I was you!!

TRIUMPH: Defi Du Seuil has been the favourite here for quite a while, but I’m going to go with the other JP McManus runner, Charli Parcs here. I’m willing to forgive and forget the fall in Kempton the last day. The dogs are barking for this fella and the price is shortening all the while.

COUNTY: Ivanovich Gorbatov has been relatively disappointing since his Triumph Hurdle win here in this card 12 months ago. Normally horses of this calibre progress into open company. Although the old adage of juveniles not training on in the NH game does often ring true, I think he still retains a fair bit of ability and could be in with a right shout in handicap company.

ALBERT BARTLETT: Death Duty has been described as a banker by his trainer and Gordon Elliott could hardly be in better form! However, this race has a tendency has to throw up the occasional upset. The one I like to oppose the fav is Wholestone who has ran at Cheltenham no less than the last four times he has ran. And ran well each time, too.

GOLD CUP: I’m siding with Djakadam here. I think this is the best preparation he’s had for the race, I was really impressed with the Punchestown run too. I wouldn’t crab the Lexus run too much and think he has a really could chance of giving Willie Mullins a Gold Cup. The one at an each way price I like is Champagne West who absolutely bolted up in the Thyestes, a race that often produces some decent Gold Cup form.

FOX HUNTERS: Unoriginal, but I can’t see On The Fringe being beaten, although I’ve said that already this week and been very wrong! He normally puts in a stinker first time, but ran a lovely race in the Raymond Smith at Leopardstown on Irish Gold Cup day in behind the match fit Foxrock.

MARTIN PIPE: It’s shit or bust time here if we’re struggling! I think Runfordave could run a big race in this. By a sire I really like and ran a great race the last day, when winning, to secure a spot in this. One at an each way price that I’ve completely nicked from Brendan Duke, of RP Podcast fame, is Thomas Campbell E/W. Broke his maiden at Cheltenham back earlier in the season and the step up in trip should not be an issue. (It’s not plagiarism if I credit you Brendan!)

GRAND ANNUAL: Loved the spin over hurdles Velvet Maker had in Leopardstown the last day. Think he’s been laid out for this, yard in form and is a fair each way price at 12/1!

So that’s it for Cheltenham 2017 folks! Not the smoothest of rides, at all!

Cheltenham Day 3 – Room to improve…

Cause

Day 2 was an absolute scorcher in Cheltenham, but whilst the sun may have been easy to spot in the clear blue sky, most punters, including my good self, struggled to spot the winners.

Cause of Causes has done me a favour, but at the half way stage we’ve got a fair battle on our hands to get out!

Onward!

13:30 JLT Novices’ Chase: I hate to say it, but the way Willie’s have been running would make Yorkhill look vulnerable, especially at the prices. Was even money Wednesday morning and on the drift. The one I like is Disko for Noel Meade and Gigginstown. Bounced away at Leopardstown the last day and looked impressive under Sean Flanagan. A certain B Cooper takes over here and he’s my selection. 13/2 available with one firm at the moment.

14:10 Pertemps Final: The one I’ve gone with here at an each way price is Rocklander E/W with 25/1 currently available. Second behind Impulsive Star at Exeter last time when giving away a bundle of weight. I think this son of Oscar could well out run his price tomorrow and go close for Tom George and Adrian Heskin who are bang in form this season.

14:50 Ryanair Chase: The ground has gone against UDS and for me Empire Of Dirt is the one here. Looked so good in the Troytown, ran a belter in the Irish Gold Cup. He should be bang there.

15:30 Stayers’ Hurdle: I’ve got a tendency to look for a way to get Unowhatimeanharry beaten everytime he runs but this time I think he’ll be very tough to pass. Cole Harden for the forecast/betting without.

16:10 Brown Advisory & Merriebelle Stable Plate Handicap Chase : I’m a bit of Richard Newland fan boy, particularly in trappy handicap chases. This will probably be the best   ground Rock Gone E/W has met in his career but I’m hoping he can put in a big shift. 33/1 e/w.

16:50 Trull House Stud Mares’ Novices’ Hurdle: Willies two, Lets Dance and Airlie Beach, look really sharp and are the most likely to fill the first two spots. However, one which I feel has been overlooked in the betting is Toe The Line E/W for John E Kiely and Denis O’Regan. She’s a mare that I have a real soft spot for and is worth an each way shout at 20s.

17:30 Fulke Walwyn Kim Muir Challenge Cup: Squouateur has gotten in to this and has every chance of giving Jamie Codd his third winner of the festival! Was very well fancied ahead of the Martin Pipe last year but underperformed. Hopefully chasing will bring out the best in this son of Martaline this year!

That’s Day 3 folks! The very best of luck!

Cheltenham Day 2 – The only way is up…

La

The less said about day 1, the better. A howler from yours truly. Although, Labaik did put a smile on my face!

We go again.

I’m tight for time so I’ll plough ahead.

13:10 Neptune Novices’ Hurdle: Neon Wolf has looked very, very sharp this term and is the obvious choice here, although the favourites did struggle on day 1!

14:10 RSA Novices’ Chase: Taking on the favourite in Might Bite here and give a shout to Alpha Des Obeaux. Has had a mixed start to his chasing career, but is top class on his day. Mouse is coming in to a bit of form too.

14:50 Coral Cup Handicap Hurdle: Tombstone’s Supreme Novice’s form was franked not once, but twice on Day 1 and I can’t help but sit up and take note. He’s probably been one of the most frequently tipped up handicap horses in the run up to the festival, so it’s not the most original angle, but he does look well handicapped now.

15:30 Queen Mother Champion Chase: Douvan‘s a freak. Pass it on. God’s Own to come second.

16:10 Cross Country ChaseThis doesn’t really tickle my fancy as a race to have a punt in, but if I had to… Cause Of Causes has been very well touted in the run up to the festival. Warmed to the task quite well over this course and distance in January and looks to mae it a festival hat trick!

16:50 Fred Winter Juvenile Handicap Hurdle: When asked ‘Give us one for the Festival, Tom’, which didn’t actually happen too often, to be fair, the one name that I pulled out was Divin Bere. A tough performance when winning on British debut, form has worked out particularly well, recipient of a “Wind Op” since that run, and a bang in Nicky Henderson combine to make this a strong fancy. Long Call and Dolos are the worries, for me.

17:30 Weatherbys Champion BumperSomeday gets the nod here for me. Got the better of a sharp Mullins horse in Leopardstown the last day and should progress. UPDATE: Someday now a non-runner, take a flyer with Bakmaj ew.

So that’s it for Day 2, folks.

Hopefully we’ll improve!

Cheltenham Day 1 – Let the games begin…

‘What’s another year?’ was one of the great rhetorical questions ever posed by the great crooner, Johnny Logan.

‘I’ve been waiting such a long time, Looking out for you, But you’re not here…’

Well, Johnny, you Cheltenham-centric swine, you. The wait is over, my friend. You’ve weathered the 361 odd day famine, prepare for the proverbial feast.
Yes indeed, the Cheltenham Festival has rolled around once again and, as has become tradition, I’ll be here covering each of the four days. At long last the trials are run, the previews are over and the talking is finished. We can finally get down to business.
If you’re a Turf Talk virgin, you’re very welcome along. Let me fill you in on how the whole thing works. I’m a waffler, a pontificator, a spoofer of the highest degree. If you’re not into that whole ‘buzz’ well then scroll down and the selections are in bold. But be warned, as every year I add this caveat I feel it’s as important as ever to point out that I am not in any way shape or form a professional punter. I’m just a racing fan with a penchant for talking shite. Occasionally I call it right, but alas, I get it wrong sometimes too. Just thought I’d point that out for anyone who’s been promised perfection!
As for you hardened Turf Talk followers, you’re very welcome back! I’m sure you know the drill at this stage!
A quick acknowledgement of the fact that this is the 5th consecutive Cheltenham Festival I’ve covered on the blog. A lot has changed since that first fateful day in 2013, but it would be remiss of me not to extend my warmest thanks to you, the reader. New ones, of course, but especially the regulars. It’s your continued interest and interaction that keeps me on my toes.
Jesus Christ, I think I’m getting soft.
Anyway, enough of that auld guff. Let’s get stuck in, shall we?

13:30 Sky Bet Supreme Novices’ Hurdle: The curtain raiser. This race often commands a lot of pre-festival attention due to it’s position on the card. This year the 2 mile Novice Hurdling supremos are probably lacking the standout star which we’ve become accustomed in previous years. Think Altior, Douvan, Vautour etc. At the moment, at least. Melon has been subject to a significant amount of talk, looked sharp enough in maiden hurdle company and  could well turn out to be a class horse over timber. However, with only one run over hurdles against lesser competition, a short enough price and so many unknowns I have to look elsewhere, even though Ruby Walsh has decided to ride. I won’t blather on here, the one I’ve gone for is Bunk Off Early. A very solid run in a Grade 1 last time when second in the Deloitte to Bacardys at Leopardstown. Back on better ground and a slightly shorter trip should suit.

14:10 Racing Post Arkle Challenge Trophy Novices’ Chase: Very little to discuss here in the context of the search for the winner. Altior is shaping up to be one of the greats with the tagline ‘the next Sprinter Sacre’ being thrown about with reckless abandon. Who knows how far he’ll go, but in 2m Novice Chase category he looks a class above his contemporaries and should win well, although at a prohibitive price. One out the market to give a second glance to is Some Plan for Henry De Bromhead and David Mullins. Obviously the race the last day fell apart, but I think on better ground he could outrun 20/1 but shouldn’t trouble the fav realistically. 4/1 for a place is a fair bet, for me.
14:50 Ultima Handicap Chase: A very competitive handicap, as one would expect at the Cheltenham Festival. At 7/1 the field the market has yet to really speak for anything here, but I’m looking at one at an each way price. The one I like here is Label Des Obeaux for Alan King and co. At 6 years old, perhaps a tad young for this kind of contest, but he’s a horse on the improve, winning the last twice, getting 7lbs for his latest victory. Hasn’t been out of the frame all year and ran well at Cheltenham, behind Singlefarmpayment, earlier in the season. 16/1 e/w with 5 places around.
15:30 Champion Hurdle Challenge Trophy: The more I look at this race the more bullish I become about Yanworth. ‘Bullish about a favourite Tom? Real original…’ Alright, alright. Gizz a break. But I do really like him. Unbeaten this season, including the Christmas hurdle, stays well. The bet of the day for me. Only beaten by Yorkhill in the Neptune last year. Mark Walsh. Oooooh, I can feel it in me waters, lads.
16:10 Mares Hurdle: I’ve genuinely lost a bit of sleep trying to come a decision here. Firstly, I’d been knocked for 6 when it was announced Limini and Vroum Vroum Mag would take each other on in the mares. Then I was trying to figure out whether or not Apples Jade would still be a player, even though Limini handed her arse to her last time. Vroum Vroum looked out of sorts at Doncaster last time and perhaps still is, given Ruby has elected to ride Limini. With that in mind, I’ve taken the cowards route and opted with the favourite, with the view that, in this particular case, Ruby’s judgement must be worth a fair amount.

16:50 JT McNamara National Hunt Chase: Edwulf and A Genie In Abottle deserve to be at the top of the betting and are likely to run big races with top of the range amateurs booked to take the respective rides, but the juice is gone out of their prices. One at an each way price that really took my eye the last day was Bigbadjohn of Rebecca Curtis’. All he did was stay the last day over 3m at Ascot. At 14/1 e/w getting 4 places with a few firms, one I’d like.

17:30 Close Brothers Novices’ Handicap Chase: Foxtail Hill has been all the rage on the Cheltenham Preview Night circuit and does have a fair chance. However, I’d prefer to have an e/w bet on a horse of Henry De Bromhead’s down the bottom of the weights by the name of All Hell Let Loose. Looked a different beast first time out for Henry during the summer and, no doubt, that mark has been protected for a ‘big day out’.
Sin é for Day 1, folks. It’s good to be back!

Beir bua!
